Turkey and Bean Burger Recipe
Though grilling season may be over, there are still plenty of ways to cook burgers inside. The easiest way is baking them in the oven! Today I’ll share my recipe for turkey and bean burgers as well as share why they are a healthy option the next time you are planning your weekly meal prep.
Why add beans?
Adding beans to your turkey burgers is an excellent compromise between a full-on meat burger and a completely vegetarian burger. If you’re trying to convince family members (or yourself!) to eat less meat, these burgers are a great place to start.
Another advantage of adding beans is that you’ll be able to stretch the ground turkey and make more burgers. Typically, when I use 1 pound of ground turkey, I’ll make four burgers, but when adding beans, I can make six.
Beans are a healthy plant-based protein. Just 1/2 cup of cooked beans contains around 8 grams of protein. Beans are also a great source of gut-healthy fiber, containing around 8 grams of fiber per 1/2 cup cooked as well.
Turkey and Bean Burger
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 1 15 oz can of beans, drained and rinsed (pinto, kidney, or white beans work well)
- Seasonings of choice (I often use a mix of garlic powder, onion flakes, dried herbs, salt, and pepper)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F/180 degrees C.
- Add the beans to a microwave-safe dish and microwave for 1 1/2-2 minutes until hot.
- Mash the beans with a potato masher or the back of a fork.
- Allow the beans to cool for 5-10 minutes.
- To the same bowl, add ground turkey and seasonings. Make sure to add plenty of seasoning so the burgers have enough flavor!
- Mix the burger mixture well with a spoon or your hands.
- Shape into 6 patties and place in a greased baking dish.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a meat thermometer inserted into the center of a burger reads 165 degrees F/74 degrees C.
- Allow the burgers to sit for 5 minutes then serve and enjoy!
Serving and meal prep
These turkey and bean burgers still taste great as leftovers. You can even try doubling the recipe and eat them all week. These burgers can be served as traditional burgers on buns with all the fixings, or you can skip the bun or have them in a lettuce wrap if you’re watching carbs. Try melting cheese on the burgers during the last few minutes of cooking or serve with sliced avocado or guacamole for some heart-healthy fat. I like to serve the burgers with roasted sweet potatoes and a big salad!
As you can see, baking turkey burgers in the oven is easy! Next time you’re making burgers, try adding beans and see what you think. Adding beans can save money and calories. Stay tuned for more recipes that can help you stretch your food and save money.
