8 Cans of Food That Are Always in My Pantry

Now more than ever, people are stocking up on food to make fewer grocery trips. Canned goods are the ultimate pantry staple because they have a long shelf-life and are incredibly versatile. Today, I’ll share my favorite canned goods plus a few of my favorite ways to use them!

1. Corn

Corn can be added to all kinds of dishes. I recommend unsalted varieties if you can find them, but if not just rinse with water before using. Some of my favorite ways to use canned corn include adding it to chili, soup, or stew, mixing it into cornbread, and stirring it into quinoa salad. Or you can just eat it right out of the can!

Again, try to find unsalted versions. I prefer frozen green beans, but these are nice to have in a pinch. I think they are best when added to soups or stews. I recently used canned green beans instead of fresh when making this curry and it turned out great!

3. Diced and crushed tomatoes

Canned tomatoes make whipping up a batch of pasta sauce so simple! They are also great when added to soup or chili. More recently, I’ve been able to find unsalted canned tomatoes, which is the way to go since you’re likely already adding salt to whatever dish you’re preparing.

Tomato paste is much more concentrated than diced or crushed tomatoes, so it packs a punch of tomato flavor. I like using it to make a quick pizza sauce.

A quick and easy protein source, canned beans are a weekly menu item in our house. I like to keep a variety of beans on hand, including garbanzo, black, pinto, kidney, and cannellini. Look for low sodium versions or rinse beans before using them in soup, stew, or chili. I love Mexican food and canned beans are an easy way to add a little extra protein and fiber to tacos, burritos, burrito bowls, enchiladas, and quesadillas.

These can be used interchangeably with canned beans. They can also be a great addition to a salad or added to pasta sauce for extra protein and fiber.

Canned+chicken.jpg

Not only is canned chicken my dog Tucker’s favorite treat (he comes running when he hears the can opener), but it’s great to have on hand when you don’t want to or don’t have time to cook chicken from scratch. I like adding it to homemade chicken noodle soup. It also makes a great chicken salad, especially when combined with this mayo.

Coconut milk.jpg

I love making curry, especially this time of year when it’s cold outside. Coconut milk is a great way to add creaminess to a dish, and it's dairy-free! Just remember it is high in fat, so if you’re looking for a lighter version, try this.

I hope this gives you an idea of my favorite canned goods that can make meal prep a bit easier. Are there other canned goods that you like to keep on hand? If so, feel free to leave a comment below!
