Dog-Friendly Thanksgiving Leftover Muffins

Happy Thanksgiving! I don’t know about you, but there are always plenty of leftovers around at my house after Thanksgiving. It’s easy to get tired of eating the same thing after a few days, so here is a fun recipe that will let you share those leftovers with your dog.

Food safety for dogs

Before making these homemade treats for your dog, make sure that all the ingredients you are using are safe to give to dogs. There are several foods that can make dogs sick, such as garlic and onion, so make sure your ingredients are plain and contain very little or no salt, as too much salt is not good for dogs.

Check out these resources for more about foods that are and are not safe for your dog:

Ingredients in dog-friendly muffins

These muffins are made using common ingredients you may have on hand for your Thanksgiving feast. Feel free to modify them based on what you have but be sure to double-check that the ingredients you use are safe for dogs. My muffins contain:

  • Canned pumpkin puree (make sure there isn’t any sugar or other ingredients added) - you could also use plain pureed sweet potato

  • Green beans - fresh or frozen are preferred to avoid added salt, but you could also use canned (just make sure to rinse them well first)

  • Skinless, boneless turkey - use the white meat for less fat

  • Egg - this helps bind the ingredients together

  • Flour - use whole wheat for extra fiber

Dog-Friendly Thanksgiving Leftover Muffins

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree (without added sugar or salt)
  • 1/2 cup green beans, finely chopped (without added salt or seasoning)
  • 1/2 cup boneless skinless turkey, finely chopped (preferably white meat)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup whole grain flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F/175 degrees C.
  2. Add all ingredients to a medium bowl and mix until combined.
  3. Scoop batter into a greased muffin tin. This recipe makes 9 regular-sized muffins. You could also use a mini muffin tin if you'd like to make smaller muffins.
  4. Bake for 16-18 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.
  5. Allow muffins to cool before serving.

These muffins may not look super appetizing, but I can assure you that your dog will gobble them up! My dog Tucker sure enjoyed them. Store any leftover muffins in the fridge or freezer.

Happy Thanksgiving!
