8 Healthy & Quick Breakfast Ideas

Some say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and for good reason! How can you go to work or school on an empty stomach and expect to perform at your best? Today’s post is dedicated to why breakfast is important, how to make a healthy breakfast, and my 8 favorite quick and easy on-the-go breakfast ideas.

Why is breakfast important?

Eating breakfast each day has several benefits. Personally, I know that if I don’t eat breakfast I will be cranky and tired until I can eat something. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast may gain less weight over time. Eating breakfast, especially one that is high in protein, may help you eat less later in the day. There are also studies that show skipping breakfast may worsen cholesterol levels and increase higher blood sugars over time.

What makes a healthy breakfast?

We all lead busy lives and this can make it challenging to eat breakfast. A healthy breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated or take forever to put together. I recommend including the following three components when making a balanced breakfast (or really any meal):

  1. Protein

  2. High-fiber carbohydrate

  3. Fat

This combination will keep you satisfied for much longer than a bowl of cereal or a piece of toast or fruit without anything else. Don’t think that you need three foods to meet the requirements listed above, either. Some foods fit into multiple categories, making that breakfast choice even easier! An example would be peanut butter spread on whole grain toast. The peanut butter contains protein and fat, while the whole grain toast is a high-fiber carb.

8 on-the-go breakfast ideas

  1. Peanut butter spread on whole grain toast (a whole grain bagel or English muffin would work as well)

  2. Hard boiled eggs + fruit, such as berries or an apple

  3. Egg muffin + fruit, such as cantaloupe or a banana

  4. Overnight oats

  5. Banana walnut muffin + string cheese

  6. PB&J yogurt (try topping this with a few spoonfuls of low-sugar granola for crunch)

  7. Chocolate peanut butter yogurt smoothie

  8. My favorite green smoothie

Each of the ideas listed above will give you protein, fat, and fiber for a quick and healthy breakfast. I hope this inspires you to eat breakfast, even if you are in a hurry in the mornings! What are your favorite healthy and quick breakfasts?
