It can be a challenge to eat healthy while traveling, but it is doable. An important thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to eat perfectly the whole time and that it’s important to still enjoy yourself. Today I’ll share my top 13 healthy snack options to bring on your next trip!

Before leaving on a trip, think ahead to what the food situation will be like while in transit to and once you arrive at your destination. You may not have full control over your food choices during the entire trip, but you may find there are ways to sneak in something a bit healthier.

If you’re driving, you may be able to bring a cooler of food with you. If you’re flying it may be a little more challenging, but you can still bring some non-perishable snacks with you. Packing snacks or even a full breakfast or lunch to eat early in your trip is a great way to start the trip off on the right foot.

Non-perishable snack ideas

  • Protein or nutrition bar - some good options include Kind bars, Larabars, RX bars, and Go Raw bars

  • Homemade trail mix - combine nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and whole grain cereal for a satisfying snack

  • Peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread

  • Muffins - try making these banana walnut muffins before you leave!

  • Fruit - whole apples, oranges, and bananas travel well without needing to be kept cold

  • Popcorn - this is my favorite

If you have a cooler…

  • Hard-boiled eggs

  • String cheese

  • Yogurt - look for plain or low-sugar varieties

  • Natural nut butter - try making your own! Serve on whole grain crackers or apple slices

  • Veggie sticks (carrots, cucumber, and celery are good options) + hummus

  • Cottage cheese + fruit (berries, grapes, or chopped melon are good options)

  • Avocado or guacamole - serve with whole-grain crackers or veggies
